Peace Church will present a unique concert of traditional
hymns and spirituals as well as operatic arias on Sunday July
13th at 3 p.m. Paul Pitts and John Sharpe are the scheduled
performers. Pitts, a tenor, and Sharpe, a bass have strong
voices that blend together in a remarkable way. Among the duets
that they will sing are “Rise Up, O Men of God”, “Glorious
Things of Thee Are Spoken”, “Close to Thee”, and Lloyd-Webber’s
“Pie Jesu”. Operatic arias will be by Puccini, Verdi and
Wagner. Their accompanist will be Bill Ingraham.
John Sharpe, Bass-Baritone is a resident of New Cumberland,
has performed more than 60 operatic roles. His most recent
appearances include roles with the Capitol Opera Company of
Harrisburg; with Center Stage Opera; and with the Harrisburg
Opera Company.
His recital appearances include songs from Schumann’s
Dichterliebe and Schubert’s Winterreise, for the Wednesday
Club. Previously, he sang a recital in Carnegie Recital Hall in
New York City, and sang the baritone solos in Beethoven’s Ninth
Symphony in Town Hall in New York City. His oratorio experience
includes the bass solos in Handel’s Messiah and Haydin’s
Creation, as well as Mozart’s Requiem, and Verdi’s Requiem, and
several others. He is currently bass soloist at Pine Street
Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg. He is past president of the
Wednesday Club.
Paul Pitts, tenor, is known as the “Pavarotti of Christian
Music”, has sung over 5000 performances worldwide on seven
continents to over a billion people through television, radio,
recordings, and personal appearances. He was featured soloist
for the Concert of Peace in Belfast, Ireland. This brought
praise from the President of the United States and the Queen of
England. Dr. Pitts has shared the stage with the Chaplain
of the U.S. Senate, Rear Admiral Joe Black, Congressman Joe
Pitts of Pennsylvania, and others. He has appeared in the
Crystal Cathedral, Alamo Dome, Cypress Gardens, and on the
networks, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, TBN, AND CBN.
In Harrisburg, Paul was the featured artist in a Forum concert
for the Wednesday Club in April 2006 and was one of the Four
Tenors in the Forum, also sponsored by the Wednesday Club, in
May of 2007. He has appeared with both Center Stage and Capitol
Opera of Harrisburg.
Peace Church is a 210 year old limestone sanctuary located on
the corner of St. John’s Church and Trindle Roads near Camp
Hill. It is maintained as a museum by the Pennsylvania Historic
and Museum Commission and is open on Sunday Afternoons from
June through September for free tours and cultural events.
