Introduction to the SOA Watch Movement

The Peace Church is proud to support and actively participate in the SOA Watch movement. SOA stands for School of the Americas, a controversial U.S. military training facility located in Fort Benning, Georgia. The SOA Watch movement, established in 1990, emerged as a response to the atrocities committed by graduates of the SOA in Latin America.

Empowering Communities for Social Justice

At Peace Church, we believe in the power of community and collective action to bring about positive change. The SOA Watch movement aligns with our mission to promote social justice, tackle systemic inequality, and protect human rights.

Events and Vigils:

Throughout the year, we organize various events and vigils to raise awareness about the SOA and its impact on affected communities. Join us in commemorating the lives lost and striving for a more just world. Our vigils provide an opportunity for reflection, solidarity, and peaceful protest against the unjust practices associated with the SOA.

Education and Advocacy:

Educating ourselves and others is essential to effecting change. We offer comprehensive educational resources, including online courses, workshops, and informational materials, to deepen understanding of the SOA, its historical context, and the ongoing resistance. Through advocacy campaigns, we engage policymakers and advocate for policy changes that promote accountability and transparency.

Direct Action and Community Engagement:

Peace Church actively engages in direct actions and community involvement to challenge the status quo and amplify the voices of those impacted by the SOA. We organize rallies, demonstrations, and grassroots initiatives aimed at raising awareness, mobilizing public support, and pressuring decision-makers to address the legacy of the SOA.

The Impact of the SOA on Latin America

The School of the Americas has a troubled history, providing military training to Latin American soldiers, many of whom later became involved in serious human rights violations. The graduates of the SOA have been linked to numerous instances of torture, extrajudicial killings, and disappearances across the region.

Case Studies:

By exploring specific case studies, we can understand the real-life impact of this military training facility. We delve into stories from countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, and Colombia, shedding light on the direct consequences of the graduates' actions and the importance of holding those responsible accountable.

Commemorating Victims:

We honor the memory of the victims who have suffered as a result of the SOA's legacy. Their stories inspire us to stand in solidarity with the affected communities and reaffirm our commitment to justice, peace, and human rights.
